C’s Recap – Everett Eviscerates Vancouver In Series Opener

Brock Lundquist got on base three times in Everett Monday night.

C's RecapThe Vancouver Canadians were embarrassed by the Everett AquaSox in the opener of their three-game series, losing 9-2 at Everett Memorial Stadium Monday night. The C’s—who began the night tied for first in the Northwest League North Division—fell a game behind Tri-City after the Dust Devils beat the Spokane Indians Monday.

The AquaSox scored in six different innings off five different pitchers, including starter Jose Espada. He retired the side in order in the first but loaded the bases in the second before plunking David Banuelos to score the first run. Espada prevented further damage in the second but served up a solo homer to Joseph Rosa to start off the third.

Vancouver cut the Everett lead in half with their first run in the fourth. Cullen Large doubled to give the C’s their first hit of the night before advancing to third on a Brock Lundquist ground out. Large would rumble home on a wild pitch by AquaSox starter Michael Suarez.

Espada got the C’s back on offence after striking out the side in the fourth, accounting for half of his six K’s on the evening. Norberto Obeso had a one-out double in the fifth and got to third with a balk but Matt Morgan and Reggie Pruitt struck out to stop that rally.

Returning to the mound for the fifth, Espada recorded just one out as he left a Rosa walk aboard for Brayden Bouchey. Morgan helped Bouchey out by nailing Rosa trying to steal second but that was followed by a Johnny Slater home run to restore Everett’s two-run lead.

Justin Dillon made his pro debut in the sixth for the C’s but he did not have a great time of it as he gave up a run on three hits. Vancouver got one run back when Pruitt scored a Riley Adams walk with a base hit in the seventh.

Everett put the final nails in the coffin with three runs in their half of the seventh with three runs against Miguel Burgos and two more against William Ouellette in the eighth, who also allowed an inherited runner to score in 1-1/3 innings.

The next inning saw Lundquist and Bryan Lizardo get aboard on a hit by pitch and a single respectively but Lundquist was thrown out at the plate on a Kacy Clemens base hit. An Obeso walk and a Morgan plunk put two runners aboard in the ninth but the C’s went down in order to end the game.

Vancouver falls to 8-4 on the season while Everett is back at .500 at 6-6.

The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 pm in Everett with Dalton Rodriguez slated to start for the C’s. The game can be heard on CanadiansBaseball.com.

About Niall O'Donohoe

My name is Niall O’Donohoe and I am an avid follower of baseball, specifically Canada’s Teams – the Toronto Blue Jays and their affiliate, the Vancouver Canadians. My blog beginnings began in 2007 with Batter’s Box, where I’m still allowed to write stories, summaries and photos about the Blue Jays minor league system under the alias #2JBrumfield. The blog formerly known as Niall On Baseball, C’s Plus Baseball follows the C’s from behind the lens at Nat Bailey Stadium. The reason for the name change was to reflect the main purpose of this blog, which is to deliver plus coverage of the C’s through photos and observations of the players striving to make it to the major leagues, be it with Toronto or one of the other 29 MLB teams. From time to time, I do make it to other baseball games outside of The Nat and will post about them here as well. If you like what you see here, please spread the word about CsPlusBaseball.com by tweeting about this website or using your favourite social media platform about this website that pledges to deliver awesome content about Canada’s only affiliated professional minor league baseball club. Spread the word by legal means only. Don’t write it on any bathroom walls or spray paint any buildings because I have no bail money for you. Still, anything you can do would be very much appreciated!
